Over the past few years, there has been a lot of discussion around youth athletes. The when and how to implement performance training for youth athletes has been at the forefront of these discussions. What the research has clearly shown, is that if performance training (i.e. strength and conditioning, running mechanics, proprioception, trunk stability etc) is not implemented as early as possible and delivered by someone well versed in pediatric exercise science it may lead to underdeveloped, injury-prone athletes. It’s imperative that schools take a long-term approach to athletic development to ensure optimal future performance in youth athletes.
